Your
Health, Your Worship!
“Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you
shall rest; that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your
servant woman, and the alien, may be refreshed” – Exodus 23:12
Oftentimes, we read portions of the scriptures that have to
do with laws with pains and boredom. Why would God command a particular day,
weeks and year be set apart in a spiritual ordinance called Sabbath?
How does the refreshing of our slaves, oxen, donkeys, etc.
affect our spirituality? Do we become holy and more consecrated when we observe
Sabbath?
Rejuvenation is the peak process that takes place in the
human body between the hours of 8:00pm and 4:00am each day. During this
process, several repairs are carried out on damaged tissues and cells, those
that cannot be repaired are replaced while worn out cells are changed for newly
reproduced cells.
This phase also witnesses the body’s self –repair process
where healing and reversal activities are peak. The body is expected to be in a
state of rest to accomplish this as well as being at its peak.
We live in very active times where there are several
distractions eating into our time including the period of rest. About 50 million cells die in the human body
daily while about 50 million new cells are reproduced to replace these dead
cells. The peak time for this activity is during sleep.
Consider a football coach who has 11 players on the field of
play. One player got injured and he did not replace that player. The match went
on and another player was sent off the field of play leaving him with 9
players. This depletion in the team will eventually lead to their loss as they
play against an opponent with 11 players.
This is what happens when we do not have enough sleep. An
average of 6 to 8 hours sleep is recommended daily so the body can carry out
repair, replacement, and reproduction of new cells where necessary. When we do not sleep enough, partial
replacement and repair takes place. Probably 30 million cells are reproduced
while 50 million cells are needed. The individual goes into the new day with a
deficit of 20 million cells.
When the body is allowed to rest, the body is enabled to
serve us better. This is the whole essence of Sabbath. As Jesus would later
come to clarify 2000 years later, that
God created the concept of Sabbath for us to live healthy and better lives and
not to make them holier or close to God.
As you cannot offer a sick animal with blemish or disabled
as a sacrifice, so your bodies need to be whole to serve the living God. He
desires our bodies as living sacrifices and no more animals.
Confession: Lord I yield my body to you as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable in good health and soundness of mind in Jesus
name.
