FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL – DAY 21

Healthy Weight Management

I have the right to do anything," you say--but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"--but not everything is constructive.” – I Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)

Weight management products have become high selling medical products globally. There are so many protocols with and without scientific proofs and studies yet with claims to work wonders in helping individuals with their weight issue.

Firstly, an individual can be underweight, ideal weight, overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. The body mass index (BMI) can be calculated by dividing the weight (W) in kg by the square of the individual’s height in centimeter (H2).

Whenever the result is below 18.5, the individual is said to be underweight. Results below 24.9 is said to be ideal while results between 25 and 30 means the individual is overweight. Obese individuals will fall between 30 and 40 while morbidly obese individuals will have readings above 40.

It is important to note that the human body stops growing vertically at a particular age as any type of growth after this age will be horizontal which means increase to the sides. To prevent this horizontal growth is to take weight management issues seriously.

Secondly, weight gain can be due to diet, lifestyle, heredity, and individual factors like hormonal imbalance, basal metabolic rate, etc. Addressing the above factors will help an individual address weight issues. Diet will include what to eat, how to eat, how to prepare and preserve what to eat, and also when food should be taken.

Lifestyle issues can be resolved by avoiding sedentary living and embracing aerobics for physical fitness. Adequate sleep and avoiding emotional stress are also lifestyle choices for weight management. Individuals with hereditary factors will be able to handle weight management issues by changing family patterns and embrace a change in both diet and lifestyle.

Hormonal imbalance can be precipitated by several factors. Women using hormonal birth control methods should seek alternatives that are non-hormonal.

To lose weight naturally, avoid all forms of refined sugar but use natural sweeteners like date, organic honey, stevia, etc. Avoid refined carbohydrates most popular with snacks, fast foods, and polished staple foods. Minimize your intake of cooked food and increase your consumption of raw food. Raw food will include smoothies, juices, vegetables, salads, plant-based milk, etc.

Avoid saturated fats common with many refined oils. The body requires good fats like the omega-3 fatty acids which can be gotten from flaxseed oil and other natural means. Avocado also contains good fats which is healthy for the human body. Frying must be avoided as much as possible. Water must not be substituted for any other drink and must be taken adequately to avoid dehydration.

Weight management requires consistency and patience. Please avoid the temptation to patronize quick-fixes as the after effect could be fatal. The first place you observe weight gain is around the waistline, hence it is usually the last place to observe results. This is because weight loss follows the order of weight gain. Tummy weight seems the most difficult to address but will surely be resolved with consistency. You can practice speaking to your body and bringing it under control.

CAUTION:
Please be warned that being underweight also has dire health consequences as everyone should stay within the ideal weight in relevance to their BMI.

WHY CHRISTIANS FALL SICK

I must pay tribute and give dues to great Christians who have taken time to deal with the above topic. Some of them did after encounters with sicknesses and near-death experiences but the Lord had mercy on them and allowed them to put pen on paper for generations to come so we may understand God wants us whole and healthy. I will first acknowledge the works of Dr. George Makmus, founder of the Hallelujah Acres and the Hallelujah Diet who was diagnosed of colon cancer and went on to find out from the scriptures and science why “he” a Christian should get sick. He later wrote the book “Why Christians Get Sick” (It can be obtained from leading bookshops and online from Amazon.com). Secondly, I met Rev Tony Akinyemi over a decade ago and I believe strongly that my working with him is nothing but divine arrangement. He it was that first introduced my wife and I to the concept of healthy living. Rev Tony Akinyemi at the age of 36 with a budding ministry in the heart of Lagos was d...

PROTECT YOURSELF AND LOVED ONES FROM EBOLA

As Lagos records the first case of Ebola incidence, it has become pertinent to arouse public interest and educate people on the need for prevention as treatment and cure of the disease is not too clear to medical science as at 2014. The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (EHF) first appeared during two 1976 outbreaks in Africa. Ebola gets its name from the Ebola River, which is near one of the villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the disease first appeared. Usually an outbreak starts when someone comes into contact with the body fluids or waste of infected animals, such as monkeys, chimps, or fruit bats. Once a person is infected, he or she can then spread it to others. There are five different types of Ebola virus that cause the disease. Four of them are known to cause the disease in humans. The American Centre for Disease Control states that “the prevention of Ebola HF presents many challenges. Because it is still unknown how exac...

FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL - DAY 11

You Need Bacteria “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies….” – Psalm 23:5 David saw God preparing his table in the presence of his enemies. They have an important role to play in your lifting. Bacteria would be considered enemies of the human health but they serve several beneficial purposes to the body. There are about 100 Trillion bacteria in the human body while there are about 1 Quadrillion viruses (Bacteriophages) present in the human microbiome. The bacteria would outnumber the human cells by 10 to 1 while the viruses outnumber the bacteria by almost the same margin. Several researches have demonstrated the importance of bacteria to human health. There are several bacteria that promote infections and diseases in the human body but there are also several bacteria responsible for many critical functions in the human body. Bacteria are responsible for the breaking down of food particles in the body which when absent can lead to obesity...
