FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL – DAY 20

The Little That Means So Much

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come..” – I Timothy 4:13

Many bible scholars alluded to the fact that Paul had health issues and this he carried on for a better part of his ministry. Certainly, he was not a novice as touching health issues just as he displayed sound knowledge in several areas. It was Paul who advised Timothy about the importance of fermented grapes (interpreted to be alcohol by many) for Timothy’s stomach issues.

So what was he trying to say here? Was he trying to de-emphasize the importance of physical fitness? Paul was rather making a comparison between the physical and the spiritual. As believers, we know that the spiritual is far superior to the physical but we require the physical to be present on this side of eternity.

Many people have run off in error trying to substitute physical exercise with spiritual training. They are not alternatives but compliments. Ignorant of this truth, many who are strong spiritually made a shipwreck of their faith. How do you explain the concept of an Elisha with the double portion of the anointing on the life if Elijah, who doubled all the miracles performed by Elijah but we were told he died of his own sickness.

God willing to proof the efficacy of the anointing on the life of Elisha caused a dead body that came in contact with Elisha’s corpse to come back to life. One wonders why the anointing upon the life of Elisha could not heal him of his own sickness which eventually killed him. Simple, most spiritually minded people overlook the seemingly little things of life. Interestingly, these seemingly little things account for so much.

Physical fitness is one of such seemingly little things. Studies have shown the dangers of sedentary living. Circulatory functions in the body are undertaken by the blood and the lymph. The blood is powered and pumped by the heart but the lymph requires fitness to be mobilized.

Wastes and nutrients are moved around the body with these functions as their inefficiency causes the toxin to be trapped in the body and compromises the integrity of the blood and blood vessels leading to the initiation of several disease conditions.

There are various forms of aerobics that can be engaged for physical fitness. It is advisable that a comprehensive medical exam is taken before embarking on any rigorous physical fitness program.

For individuals working in jobs that requires sitting for long hours, alternate and intentionally carry out some activities like receiving or making phone while working around your office.
Choosing to use the stairway instead of elevator is another way of exercising your body for people working in a fast-paced environment. If you observe an irregular heartbeat pattern or find yourself gasping for breath when you do this, you may need to consult your healthcare provider for immediate evaluation. You may also decide to walk a few blocks to the office every morning as you alight from your car a few meters away from your office.

You may also practice brisk walking, push-ups, rope skipping and other DIY exercises at home. Physical fitness must be intentional. You can help yourself by having a partner for peer influence. Set reasonable goals within your health limit and grow gradually.

Confession: Thank you dear Lord for giving me all things that pertains to a healthy life and godliness. I harness them to fulfill your purpose for my life both here and in eternity in Jesus name.

WHY CHRISTIANS FALL SICK

I must pay tribute and give dues to great Christians who have taken time to deal with the above topic. Some of them did after encounters with sicknesses and near-death experiences but the Lord had mercy on them and allowed them to put pen on paper for generations to come so we may understand God wants us whole and healthy. I will first acknowledge the works of Dr. George Makmus, founder of the Hallelujah Acres and the Hallelujah Diet who was diagnosed of colon cancer and went on to find out from the scriptures and science why “he” a Christian should get sick. He later wrote the book “Why Christians Get Sick” (It can be obtained from leading bookshops and online from Amazon.com). Secondly, I met Rev Tony Akinyemi over a decade ago and I believe strongly that my working with him is nothing but divine arrangement. He it was that first introduced my wife and I to the concept of healthy living. Rev Tony Akinyemi at the age of 36 with a budding ministry in the heart of Lagos was d...

PROTECT YOURSELF AND LOVED ONES FROM EBOLA

As Lagos records the first case of Ebola incidence, it has become pertinent to arouse public interest and educate people on the need for prevention as treatment and cure of the disease is not too clear to medical science as at 2014. The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (EHF) first appeared during two 1976 outbreaks in Africa. Ebola gets its name from the Ebola River, which is near one of the villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the disease first appeared. Usually an outbreak starts when someone comes into contact with the body fluids or waste of infected animals, such as monkeys, chimps, or fruit bats. Once a person is infected, he or she can then spread it to others. There are five different types of Ebola virus that cause the disease. Four of them are known to cause the disease in humans. The American Centre for Disease Control states that “the prevention of Ebola HF presents many challenges. Because it is still unknown how exac...

FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL - DAY 11

You Need Bacteria “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies….” – Psalm 23:5 David saw God preparing his table in the presence of his enemies. They have an important role to play in your lifting. Bacteria would be considered enemies of the human health but they serve several beneficial purposes to the body. There are about 100 Trillion bacteria in the human body while there are about 1 Quadrillion viruses (Bacteriophages) present in the human microbiome. The bacteria would outnumber the human cells by 10 to 1 while the viruses outnumber the bacteria by almost the same margin. Several researches have demonstrated the importance of bacteria to human health. There are several bacteria that promote infections and diseases in the human body but there are also several bacteria responsible for many critical functions in the human body. Bacteria are responsible for the breaking down of food particles in the body which when absent can lead to obesity...
