“ Having a form of godliness, but denying the
power thereof: from such turn away.” – 2 Timothy 3:5
Joseph Scriven in 1855 wrote the hymn “What A friend We Have
In Jesus” as a poem to his mother who was living in Ireland and critically ill
while he lived in Canada. Joseph had just lost his fiancé who died on her
sickbed when he was told of his mother’s condition. He wrote “Oh, what peace we
often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear.”
Tremendous power has been made available to believers by the
death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Power over death, sicknesses, demons,
and situations of life was handed to us when Jesus rose from the dead. As
believers, we live a different life and operate under a new set of rules.
This victorious living is not the story in many lives. Paul
speaking to the church at Corinth said many of them were sick, weak and do fall
asleep because they could not discern the body of the Lord (1 Corinthians
11:30). Lack of a discerning heart is another level of ignorance. Many people
are just too scared to open themselves up to more knowledge. God has no apology
for such when He said he would reject people who reject knowledge (Hosea4:6).
It is becoming a common knowledge that taking responsibility
for your finances through diligent work and sound practice of financial
principles are critical to financial success despite the biblical rules of
paying of tithes, word confessions and sowing of seeds. But some Christians do
believe that these biblical rules are enough to keep them healthy without other
physical responsibilities.
Most believers have a very poor knowledge of health and
healthy living though several contents are spread all over scriptures. It is
dangerous to leave your health in the hands of your healthcare providers.
Regular health checks is a taboo for most believers who think the covenant
precludes them from keeping tab on happenings in their own bodies.
Unwholesome spiritual practices like keeping vigils repeatedly
for days is injurious to the body. God has not wired the human body for such
assault which was a reason God placed strong emphasis on the Sabbath and Jesus
confirmed the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27).
Another one is regular fast without water for a period above
6 hours. Fasts are medicinal and promote good health if properly done but what
most believers practice is killing their health in bits. The body must not be
allowed to get dehydrated. Dehydration is at the root of many health
conditions. You are not meant to substitute food with water during fasts, but
sipping water intermittently during a fast is like lubricating your engines.
Some believers even go as far as refusing medical help while
professing faith in the power of God to heal. Certainly, Jesus had no reason to
part the seas like Moses and Joshua did because there were boats and ships with
capacity to convey himself and his disciples to the other side. Except in cases
where capacity is lacking either in available solutions or individual
limitations, please patronize medical help whenever you can afford it.
Jesus has led captivity captives meaning he has dealt with
all spiritual powers that could hinder our access to life and godliness; and he
gave gifts unto men even the rebellious were not denied (Psalms 68:18).
Prominent among the gifts are the inventions and creations through wisdom that
are made manifest in our generation.
No one is condemned because of sins but for refusing the
help made available by God through Jesus Christ. So much has been purchased on
our behalf thru redemption, howbeit we enjoy so little.
