FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL – DAY 23

Sleep and Healing

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he gives his beloved sleep. – Psalms 127:2

God has enabled the human body to heal itself and reverse any disease condition provided the body is adequately nourished to fulfill this role. Damaged cells and tissues are repaired while dead cells are replaced in a phased period called rejuvenation. Rejuvenation is a peak activity for the human body between the hours of 8:00pm and 4:00am daily.

A minimum of 6 hours of sleep is required daily for maximized health as this will enhance the process mentioned above. Oftentimes, patients are kept in the hospital to enable them have sufficient rest for the healing process to take place.

Every aspect of human health is disturbed when sleep is insufficient. Mental health can be impaired, hormonal balance can be altered, body temperature and pH can also be disturbed removing the body’s homeostatic balance.

As described by the scripture above, many people rise up too early and stay up late without sufficient sleep.

Certain conditions could hamper sufficient sleep. The sleep function decreases with age due to the decrease production of melatonin in the human body. As most people cross the forty-year age, they find it terribly difficult to resume sleep once interrupted. This does not enable the body complete the repair and replacement process for damaged or dead cells and tissues.

Keeping late nights is fast becoming common with young people which can lead to high blood pressure in early adult life. Unfortunately, many young people with high blood pressure are unaware of this condition until it becomes fatal as most people believe it is a condition synonymous with old age.

Adults having difficulty sleeping would be unable to manage any condition efficiently hence it is important for any health related issue hampering proper sleep to be addressed. Ensure all sources of noise of pollution are removed from around you especially during your sleep time. Have a bed time and make it consistent.

Avoid having excess lights around your bedroom. If possible, take out all lights at bed time as the body performs better in darkness for melatonin production inducing sleep. Avoid over-eating before bed time as digestion would be the major activity of the body rather than sleep.

If you have trouble sleeping, you can try the warm and cold bath. Run your shower starting with cold water and alternated with warm water repeatedly. Ensure you finish off with cold water. Towel your body and get to bed for a good night sleep.

Melatonin is a natural supplement which can be obtained in health stores. It must be taken constantly at a fix time of each day for maximum effect. Unlike most sleep-inducing medications, side-effects are nearly absent. A very light exercise in the evening will also help. Resolve issues of fear and trauma especially those related to unpleasant incidences. See a professional where necessary. Resolve issues of unforgiveness as well.

Above all, God gives His beloved sleep. Pray about your sleep and commit it to God as you lay in bed. The peace of God that passes all understanding shall keep and guard your heart.

Confession: Thank you Father for accepting me in the beloved. I receive your peace even for sound sleep to rejuvenate my health in Jesus name.

WHY CHRISTIANS FALL SICK

I must pay tribute and give dues to great Christians who have taken time to deal with the above topic. Some of them did after encounters with sicknesses and near-death experiences but the Lord had mercy on them and allowed them to put pen on paper for generations to come so we may understand God wants us whole and healthy. I will first acknowledge the works of Dr. George Makmus, founder of the Hallelujah Acres and the Hallelujah Diet who was diagnosed of colon cancer and went on to find out from the scriptures and science why “he” a Christian should get sick. He later wrote the book “Why Christians Get Sick” (It can be obtained from leading bookshops and online from Amazon.com). Secondly, I met Rev Tony Akinyemi over a decade ago and I believe strongly that my working with him is nothing but divine arrangement. He it was that first introduced my wife and I to the concept of healthy living. Rev Tony Akinyemi at the age of 36 with a budding ministry in the heart of Lagos was d...

PROTECT YOURSELF AND LOVED ONES FROM EBOLA

As Lagos records the first case of Ebola incidence, it has become pertinent to arouse public interest and educate people on the need for prevention as treatment and cure of the disease is not too clear to medical science as at 2014. The Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever (EHF) first appeared during two 1976 outbreaks in Africa. Ebola gets its name from the Ebola River, which is near one of the villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the disease first appeared. Usually an outbreak starts when someone comes into contact with the body fluids or waste of infected animals, such as monkeys, chimps, or fruit bats. Once a person is infected, he or she can then spread it to others. There are five different types of Ebola virus that cause the disease. Four of them are known to cause the disease in humans. The American Centre for Disease Control states that “the prevention of Ebola HF presents many challenges. Because it is still unknown how exac...

FAITH, HEALTH & HEALING DEVOTIONAL - DAY 11

You Need Bacteria “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies….” – Psalm 23:5 David saw God preparing his table in the presence of his enemies. They have an important role to play in your lifting. Bacteria would be considered enemies of the human health but they serve several beneficial purposes to the body. There are about 100 Trillion bacteria in the human body while there are about 1 Quadrillion viruses (Bacteriophages) present in the human microbiome. The bacteria would outnumber the human cells by 10 to 1 while the viruses outnumber the bacteria by almost the same margin. Several researches have demonstrated the importance of bacteria to human health. There are several bacteria that promote infections and diseases in the human body but there are also several bacteria responsible for many critical functions in the human body. Bacteria are responsible for the breaking down of food particles in the body which when absent can lead to obesity...
