How Safe is
Sweet?
“Who satisfies your
mouth with good things; so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.” – Psalm
103:5
The tongue senses salty, sweet, biter, sour and umami with
different concentration at different parts of the tongue. Popular belief is
that whatever is not sweet is bad and the subconscious would gravitate toward sweet
foods, drinks, beverages, etc.
Food should taste good as most foods are naturally sweetened
with great taste. Problems start for the health when modern processing methods
including refining, polishing, chemical additives, artificial sweetening, colorings
and flavors are introduced.
Refined sugar amongst its many dangers is the reduced
efficiency of the body’s immune functions.
Most scholarly article alluded to
40% decrease in function as the white blood cells are unable to attack bacteria
or viruses due to sugar intake occupying the space needed for Vitamin C which the
white blood cells require for their body security function.
Obesity has been declared an epidemic especially as seen in
children and young adults. This is the cause of several diseases like
hypertension, Type II Diabetes, etc. Sugar laden products are fast becoming the
food of choice for many mothers because of convenience and cost. The excessive consumption
of refined sugar is at the root of these disease conditions.
Mention must be made of disorders and restless behaviors in
children of school age which are all linked to the consumption of refined sugar
causing a reduction in attention capacity of children.
Aspartame is being used to replace sugar in beverages labeled
as “low-sugar”, “zero-sugar”, etc. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found
also in energy drinks. It has several damaging health effects and sometimes
considered worse than sugar.
Healthy alternatives to sugar would be date, organic honey,
stevia, maple syrup, raisins, etc.
The psalmist wrote in the scripture above that he is
satisfied with good things and he is helped to age graciously. Sugar has become
an addiction for some people but grace is always available to break the
addiction.
It is God that satisfies. Every addiction is to fulfill a
satisfaction hence you can derive a super-satisfaction if you accept the grace
that God has provided.
Confession: Thank you Lord for satisfying me. Addictions cannot
take hold of me hence I receive your satisfying provision for every area of my
life in Jesus name.
