The Prayer
of Faith
“ And
the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and
if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” – James 5: 15
There are several questions in the minds and hearts of people going thru challenges
today. One of such questions is asking why God would afflict his own people
with sicknesses and diseases. Why do bad things happen to good people? We often
ask.
This concluding part of the epistle of James is such a
strong consolation to believers while in crisis. He gave a guide on what to do
when going thru such uncertain moments of life. He admonished anyone being
afflicted to pray. What sort of prayer?
He further encouraged those who are sick to call for the
Elders. The Elders are to anoint the fellow with oil and also pray for him for
his healing. He laid emphasis on the prayer of faith healing the sick and that
any sin committed by the individual would be forgiven.
Firstly, no sin is strong enough to allow the devil keep a
child of God in sickness. This may suggests why he dealt with the sin issue as
the last of the solutions towards healing. If anyone feels he is being held in
sickness as a result of sins, then confess and forsake the sins for your
healing. We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus the Son of God. We also
have the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us with groaning unspeakable. Hence the
issue of sin in relation to your health was dealt with and resolved 2000 years
ago by Jesus.
Secondly, he advised the sick fellow be anointed with oil.
Anointing is a sacred ordinance as indicated in Old Testament times where Moses
was given instructions as touching temple dedications. Whatever was anointed is
dedicated to the use of God and becomes sacred. Anointing with oil here is to re-affirm the
sacred status of the body of the sick fellow as dedicated and belonging to God.
Our bodies are temples of God which does not permit and defilement or
unwholesomeness.
Lastly, the Elders are to pray the prayer of faith. The
prayer of faith is not repeated “To- Do” prayers but prayers of thanksgiving in
affirmation of what has been done. For by His stripes, you “were” healed. How
many prayers of faith are being offered for the sick today? Most prayers are
offered in fear of death and the sick eventually die.
We can’t afford to keep praying the prayer of Job if we
expect the type of results as promised in the epistle of James. Sin should not
hold any believer down on their sick bed once they are confessed and repented.
Our bodies are temples of God’s Spirit. His Spirit within us activates and
triggers God’s power within us to do the impossible.
Confession: I am the healed of the Lord. Thank you Lord for
I am healed by your stripes
